PTI Withdraws from Talks: New Political Crisis in Pakistan

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party ends negotiations with the government, sparking fears of escalating political turmoil.

Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced its withdrawal from negotiations with the government, which were aimed at reducing the political tensions that have gripped the country for the past three years. This decision comes after three rounds of talks in which PTI presented its list of demands to the government.

Speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan stated that the party founder, Imran Khan—imprisoned since August 2023—categorically directed an end to talks, citing the government’s failure to act on their demands.

Preparation for Protests?
Analysts predict that PTI’s decision could lead to renewed street protests, further destabilizing the political environment. PTI has previously organized large-scale demonstrations, and the party has now indicated plans to initiate a nationwide political movement.

PTI’s demands included the formation of judicial commissions to investigate the events of May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2024, as well as the release of "political prisoners."

Government’s Reaction
Government officials expressed surprise and regret over PTI’s abrupt decision. Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a member of the government committee, stated, “We were seriously considering their demands. To say we rejected the formation of judicial commissions is incorrect.”

Analysts Weigh In
Political commentators view PTI’s withdrawal as a missed opportunity. Analyst Talat Hussain noted, “By walking out prematurely, PTI lost the chance to pressure the government and gain moral high ground.”

Experts also predict the party’s return to street agitation but question whether it can sustain the momentum it achieved in previous protests. Islamabad-based commentator Asma Shirazi added, “PTI could have waited for the government to act on its demands. Their hasty exit raises questions about their strategy.”

What’s Next?
PTI leader Zulfi Bukhari hinted at the possibility of more protests, emphasizing that the party’s supporters remain committed despite personal risks. Meanwhile, government spokesperson Aqeel Malik warned that any protests must remain peaceful.

The political crisis continues to unfold, leaving Pakistan in a state of uncertainty as both sides prepare for their next moves.
